The coat of arms of the Nova Scotia province consists of the blue cross of Saint. Andrew situated on a white background. This part of the flag symbolizes the Scottish ties of the region.
In the middle of the flag is a coat of arms with a red lion in the crown on a golden background - it is a symbol of the Kingdom of Scotland.
The de-color coloring of the Saint Andrew Cross (traditionally white stripes on a blue background) has been introduced to obtain greater readability / contrast for the coat of arms.
